Michigan Lowers Prison Population, Crime and Recidivism Rates Drop

Michigan’s Department of Corrections has reduced the state prison population by 5,000 in the last two and half years, according to an article in Freep.com.

Michigan is one of the few states that is closing prisons and reducing its prison population, says Corrections Director Patricia Caruso.

Currently, the prison population is roughly 46,400—the lowest since 2001—and Caruso expects the population to fall below 45,000 by the end of next year.

The massive buildup in prison populations in the past, both in Michgan and around the country, was driven by policies such as three-strikes laws and mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses.
