What Happens to Children When a Parent Goes to Jail?

In his blog “Children of Prisoners: Innocent and At Risk” published by Huffington Post.com, Pat Nolan tells how his own children were affected by his prison term.


"When I left for prison, my five-year-old daughter didn't understand any of the legal aspects. All she knew was that one day I was there and the next day I disappeared from her life. She felt abandoned."

An estimated 1.7 million children in the United States today have a parent behind bars. Without intervention, their futures are bleak.

Children of Incarcerated Parents: An Action Plan for Federal Policymakers is a recent study by the Council of State Governments that presents legislators and policymakers with recommendations designed to help this at-risk population.
