Two grant competitions for important programs are now available. One grant is to document successes in reentry programs. The other is for programs that establish a culture of "zero tolerance" for sexual assault in prisons and jails. Both grants are limited to applicants that are government entities or Indian tribes.
However, I would encourage all Justice eReport readers to consider how they might participate in these important programs. If you aren't a government entity, consider partnering with your state or local government in applying for these funds. Both grants require the applicants involve faith-based and community organizations in their programs. Therefore, these grants are worth discussing with your friends in government agencies. The prison rape grant applications are due July 7, 2011, and the reentry grant applications are due July 11, 2011.
If you are interested in applying for the prison rape grant, a how-to webinar will be held June 24, 2011.
I will make this eReport short and sweet so you can get to work on your applications.
These grants bring great satisfaction to all of us at Prison Fellowship. We worked very hard to pass the Second Chance Act and the Prison Rape Elimination Act. It is great to know both statutes are helping programs across the country protect inmates from rape and assist inmates as they return to their communities. We’re confident these grants will encourage reform to our prison system.
