More Prison Visits = Less Recidivism

I am really excited about a significant new study of the impact of visitation on recidivism. The study confirms the basic premise on which Prison Fellowship was founded: that visiting prisoners can significantly improve their reintroduction to the community after their release.

U.S. Sentencing Commission: Mandatory Minimum Sentences are Excessive

The U.S. Sentencing Commission has released a thorough analysis of the application and effects of mandatory minimum sentences. It is the first systematic review of mandatory minimum sentences in 20 years. During those two decades the number of mandatory minimum sentences has grown exponentially, and with that growth the number of inmates serving mandatory sentences has ballooned, filling our prisons to bursting.

Grants Available for Reentry and Prison Rape Programs

Two grant competitions for important programs are now available. One grant is to document successes in reentry programs. The other is for programs that establish a culture of "zero tolerance" for sexual assault in prisons and jails. Both grants are limited to applicants that are government entities or Indian tribes.
