If rapes are to be eliminated from American prisons we must not continue with business as usual in our prisons. It is possible to protect inmates from sexual assaults. It is now up to the Attorney General to provide strong standards to hold prison officials accountable for eliminating rapes in our prisons.

Bi-Partisan Coalition Decries DOJ’s Proposed Prison Rape Standards

A diverse collective of groups who normally stand in stringent opposition to one another stood united to condemn the Department of Justice’s proposed prison rape standards. The DOJ’s recommendations which essentially are significantly watered down compared with those of the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission (NPREC).

Press Release: National Prison Rape Elimination Commissioners Challenge Proposed Standards

Former commissioners of the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission are deeply concerned about some substantive changes that, in the view of many, will compromise rather than promote the safety of confined and detained men, women and children. The removal of standards to ensure the safety of particularly vulnerable immigration detainees, many of whom have no criminal histories, is a matter of grave concern to the former commissioners.

Former Prison Rape Commissioners Decry DOJ’s Proposed Prison Rape Standards

Former members of the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission (NPREC) held a press conference at The National Press Club to challenge the Department of Justice’s proposed prison rape standards. Commenting on the original commission being operationally out of existence but present together at the press event today, Judge Reggie Walton, chairman of the Commission, made clear to the DOJ, “We’re not going to go away.”
