Current Laws

The Second Chance Act (2007)
The Act authorizes grants for faith-based community groups to establish mentoring programs for inmates before and after release. 

It also discontinues the Standardized Chapel Library Project, which restricted prisoners'
access to religious materials. 

Executive Order:  Equal Protection of the Laws for Faith-based and Community Organizations (2002)
Presents the federal governments' policy on collaboration with faith-based groups and waves laws that would prevent groups that hire on the basis of religion from receiving federal funds.  

Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000

The Act prohibits the federal government from imposing a land use regulations that hinder a person's religious exercise.  Also prevents any government rule from substantially burdening inmate's religious exercise. 

Religious Freedom and Restoration Act of 1993
Prohibits the government from substantially burdening a person's exercise of religion.
